Macau’s trade deficit widened to MOP 10.1 billion in August 2026, up from MOP 8.5 billion in the same month a year earlier. Imports surged 18.4% year-on-year to MOP 11.5 billion, driven by robust growth in purchases of gold jewellery (64.6%), mobile phones (28.6%), watches (22.7%), construction materials (17.0%), and fuels and lubricants (15.8%).

By trading partner, import values rose markedly from China (50.7%), Italy (25.5%), and Hong Kong (25.6%).

Exports also increased, climbing 10.8% to MOP 1.4 billion, supported by higher shipments of diamonds and diamond jewellery (45.8%), as well as machines, apparatus and parts (7.3%). Export growth was particularly strong to Hong Kong (29.0%), the United States (40.8%), and India (112.6%).

For the January–August period, Macau’s cumulative trade deficit expanded to MOP 86.0 billion, compared with MOP 70.3 billion in the same period of the previous year.
